Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema & Davinci Resolve Film “ALIVE”. Rob Grant’s new horror film, “ALIVE”, used Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema & Davinci Resolve Film “ALIVE” for action shots. The film, which was released in the United States in September 2020, was also graded with Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve.

The Pocket Cinema Camera 4K was used for a large number of shots that included a variety of close-ups and tight angles, as well as action shots.

As Jules Vincent, one of the film's writers and producers, stated, "Due to the production budget, we didn't have the luxury of adding extra shooting days or rescheduling shoots, and the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K was the ideal solution.

Filming in Canada

The film, shot in Calgary, Canada, places the characters and viewers in a bloody, surreal, and nightmarish scenario. The images move between the dark interiors of a ruined medical facility and the bright world the character encounters in the caretaker's world outside the sanitarium.

Blackmagic Design Davinci Resolve

“The whole film was a really fun exercise in finding how far you could play with the darkness without losing the audience, driving the visibility of certain parts of this creepy abandoned hospital so that the audience had enough information, but not so much that you lost the tension or the emotion of the scene,” explained Brendon Rathbone, who graded the film. “Resolve is the only software I use to color, and it helped me get the look we were going for in ALIVE.”

He continued: “For any independent film, but especially a horror film, you need a suite that can do a lot of things. Davinci Resolve balances a huge feature set with stability really well, so I was able to color the film quickly and efficiently. It also allowed me to do things on my own and within budget.”

Advanced Features

“Blackmagic Design Davinci Resolve also provided very advanced noise reduction that was improved during post-processing. During the work, Blackmagic released two new versions that we were able to quickly leverage without a huge rework,” continued Rathbone.

“Apart from its value, which in my opinion is unparalleled, it is also a multi-tool. It will help with the day-to-day, cutting, color, sound, VFX and mastering,” concluded Rathbone.

The film “ALIVE” is now available on various services, including Amazon, iTunes, Vudu, DirectTV and Fandango.
