Joey Fameli, Director of Photography and Producer of the online series “Tested,” recently used several Micro Cinema cameras to film a series about an expedition to the Arctic Circle. Fameli uses Micro Cinema Cameras, Pocket Cinema Cameras, Studio Cameras, and DaVinci Resolve Studio to shoot and edit footage for “Tested,” a website dedicated to covering compelling stories about science, exploration, nature, emerging technology, and more.

As Fameli explained, “‘Tested’ is oriented towards a cultural production structure and therefore includes all fields related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics. As head of production, I handle the video content for the website, which can range from BTS footage of an experiment, special FX videos and visits to film sets, time tracking of the construction of a project, to expeditions to the Arctic Circle.”

The “Tested” team was invited by astronaut Chris Hadfield to join the Generator Arctic team during the Quark Expeditions Tour. Fameli and his team spent 18 days aboard the Russian icebreaker Kapitan Khlebnikov, sailing around Greenland and the Canadian side of the Arctic Circle.

“The Micro Cinema Cameras are very small and have a significant battery life, so they were perfect for capturing time-lapse and locked-off footage of the ship and the environment as we sailed through the Arctic,” said Fameli. “I set up a few around the ship and let them record. In return, I got flawless shots of helicopter takeoffs, slow sailing and ice breaking, life on board the legendary Russian ship, and endless hours of beautiful frozen landscapes.”

“I recently used the Micro Cinema Cameras to film a DeLorean while driving,” he continued. “I mounted 4 Micro Cinema Cameras inside the car so I had shots of the driver and passenger, a wide shot, and an exterior shot. The shooting took place at noon so we had harsh lighting and shadows, but the cameras captured everything thanks to their dynamic range and quality. We had all the footage to edit properly in DaVinci Resolve Studio.”

According to Fameli, “Tested” doesn’t have a large film crew and most of the time they don’t have any control over the environment they’re shooting in. “If we’re not in the studio, we’re usually shooting outdoors,” he explained. “That’s where the dynamic range of the Micro Cinema Camera really helps us out.”

And Fameli concluded: “We recently renovated and upgraded our Studio. We decided to use Blackmagic Studio Cameras because we needed many different ones and we knew they could meet our requirements and our goal of providing our audience with the best possible visual experience.”
