O2 Filmes created visuals for the opening of the Brazilian Olympics with DaVinci Resolve and Fusion Studio by Blackmagic Design
Blackmagic Design announced that some of the videos, including the opening ceremony video for the Brazil Olympics, were created by Brazilian company O2 Filmes, the largest production and post production company in Brazil, using DaVinci Resolve 12.5 Studio for editing and color grading and Fusion 8 Studio for visual effects.
The opening ceremony also included footage captured on a Blackmagic Production 4K camera, paying tribute to the Olympic athletes from around the world as well as the Brazilian culture that makes Brazil a world-renowned destination.
With a budget roughly one-tenth that of the 2012 London Olympics, the production team focused more on creativity and the human factor than on technological excess.
“The Olympic Games are a global television event and the opening ceremonies have always been exceptional. Without a doubt, the bar for visual excellence is raised with each event and Rio delivered with an opening ceremony that embodied the television mastery of legendary Brazilian filmmakers and the spirit of the Brazilian people,” said Paulo Barcellos of O2 Filmes.
The video of the opening ceremony was shown on screens and kiosks in the Olympic venues and broadcast on television. Some of the O2 Filmes videos of the games will be available at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) museum in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The O2 Filmes team worked for four months to create the visuals. “It all depends on the timelines,” commented Barcellos. “Even though we started four months before the games, there were times when we needed to have results in a matter of days, and that’s where the Blackmagic Design workflow really helped us.” Because the games were held in Rio, the O2 team split the editing and color grading of the footage between their facilities in Rio and São Paulo. “The remote collaboration capabilities with DaVinci Resolve Studio allowed us to stay connected and work on the production of the footage.”
Barcellos continued about the connected workflow, “A lot of the clip selection was done in Fusion Studio and then sent back to DaVinci Resolve Studio using Fusion Connect. This helped us work with the new clips much faster than if we had manually exported them one by one using another compatible application. Without this functionality, it would have been difficult to meet deadlines.”
