The new MacBook
Apple introduced its new ultra-thin MacBook on March 9. The 12-inch MacBook is the thinnest and lightest Mac product to date and is a significant departure from the existing MacBook Air and MacBook Pro Retina lines. The new MacBook, at 13.1mm thin, is 24% thinner than the MacBook Air and weighs just 900g, and features a 12-inch Retina display with a resolution of 2304 x 1440. It includes a full-size keyboard and will be available in three colors that match the iPad and iPhone – silver, gold, and space gray.
The MacBook features a new, innovative butterfly mechanism for the keys, making them 40% thinner than usual and 4 times more stable for greater precision and responsiveness. It also has a new Force Touch trackpad that incorporates Apple Watch technology and an LED keyboard backlight system.
Like previous MacBooks, the new MacBook integrates 802.11ac and includes Bluetooth 4.0 support. It has a single USB Type-C port that serves many different functions: Power delivery, USB 3.1 connectivity, and DisplayPort 1.2, HDMI, and VGA capabilities. It uses low-power 1.1GHz and 1.2GHz Intel Core M processors with Intel HD Graphics 5300, which allow it to operate silently without a fan. With an integrated battery design, the MacBook offers 24-hour battery life with up to nine hours of wireless web browsing and 10 hours of movie playback. It also has a 480p Face Time Camera and includes speakers and dual microphones.
The new MacBook will be available in two models:
- 1GHz dual-core Intel Core M Processor with Intel HD Graphics 5300 with 8GB RAM and 256GB flash storage.
- 2GHz dual-core Intel Core M processor with Intel HD Graphics 5300 with 8GB RAM and 512GB flash storage.
It will be available in the US on April 10, 2015, while it is expected in Greece by the end of the year.
