The new Blackmagic Design Ultimatte 12 is an advanced real time compositing keyer designed for the next generation of broadcast graphics. Ultimatte 12 features completely new algorithms and color science, incredible edge handling, greater color separation, amazing color fidelity, and wider bleed control than ever before.
The advanced 12G-SDI design gives users the flexibility to work in HD today and move to Ultra HD when they are ready, providing sub pixel processing for stunning image quality and textures in both HD and Ultra HD. Additionally, it is compatible with virtually all SD, HD and Ultra HD equipment, so users can use it with the cameras they already own.

Whether it’s news broadcasts, live sports, traditional TV and film productions, or even entertainment programming, Ultimatte 12 delivers the quality for incredibly lifelike compositions! Ultimatte 12 can work with both fixed cameras and static backgrounds, as well as automated virtual graphics. It can also be used to integrate computer-generated augmented reality objects into a scene! Ultimatte 12 is ideal for pre-production in TV and film production, as it allows actors and directors to see the virtual result in real time, during filming.
Keyer for each camera
It’s common for green or blue screen to show variations when you’re broadcasting live with multiple shots from different angles. The built-in keyers on live production switchers use the same parameters for all cameras, which complicates keying and image quality, as each camera “sees” the green screen a little differently. Ultimatte 12 eliminates these problems with incredible new technology at an affordable price, so you can now tag each camera. With the ability to have a dedicated keyer on each camera, Ultimatte 12 is ideal for live news broadcasts, weather and sports presentations, virtual studios, and more!
Realistic Augmented Reality
Incredible new realistic multi-layering feature for composing colored objects with a “glass look”!
Adding translucent colored or dark objects and computer graphics is nearly impossible with a traditional keyer. This is because you can’t remove a blue or green screen from a translucent colored object without changing the original color of the object. Now, with Ultimatte 12, we have a revolutionary new “realistic” layer composition that allows you to add colored objects in front of the background for realistic translucent graphics. This means that when you look through the object or when the presenter walks behind it, the colors are accurately preserved, making the appearance completely realistic!
One touch keying technology
Speed is key in live productions. Ultimatte 12 features one touch keying technology that analyzes a scene and automatically adjusts over 100 parameters! The first step is to ensure that the scene is well lit and the cameras are properly white balanced, then simply turn on the auto key and Ultimatte will do the rest! One-touch keying is dramatically faster and allows operators to focus on the overall program with fewer distractions, while Ultimatte 12 takes care of the rest!
Advanced image processing
Ultimatte 12 features new, highly advanced image processing algorithms and a huge internal color space. It automatically creates internal meshes so that different parts of the image can be processed separately based on the colors of each area. It delivers excellent edge detail where necessary, such as in hair, and smoother transitions between colors or other objects in the scene. Everything is handled with new math and sub-pixel processing designed for incredible quality and clarity in HD and Ultra HD!
Incredible color fidelity
Ultimatte 12 provides new advanced flare, edge and transition processing, so that the background can be removed without affecting the colors we want to preserve! This means that colors that would be impossible with other keyers can be preserved and faithfully reproduced, such as a bright yellow dress in front of a green screen! Ultimatte 12 is smart enough to isolate and process different parts of the image separately, while maintaining smooth color transitions between surfaces.
Shadows and Transparencies
Ultimatte 12’s improved flare algorithms can remove green and spill from anything, which is one of the reasons why Ultimatte 12 creates truly realistic virtual environments! This also means there’s no need to worry about shadows or transparent objects with reflections. Ultimatte 12 automatically samples colors, creates seamless mattes for walls, floors, and other parts of the image, and then applies the necessary corrections. Shadows are mapped and composited correctly onto the new background, spills are removed, and transparent objects are rendered perfectly!
Production & Transmission Days 2018
The Ultimate 12 was recently showcased at our event integrated into a complete Production and Post workflow with excellent results. Integrated into a full production platform with Blackmagic URSA Broadcast and Blackmagic Micro Cinema cameras, Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve 15 for editing and color correction along with Fusion 9 for composition and visual effects and the DaVinci Resolve Mini and Micro Panel.
The system was complemented by Fiber Converters with 10G Ethernet capability, a Smart Videohub 20×20 router and ATEM Live Production Switcher, and Lacie’s 2big, 6big and 12big storage systems with Thunderbolt 3 and USB connections and capacities up to 120TB. The workstations used were a powerful Apple iMac Pro and an iMac with appropriate configurations. More about the event here
