Ransomware protection

Quantum Corp. believes that with the right features, tape storage can be an effective way to protect your data from ransomware.

Quantum's recently announced Ransomware Protection packages add essential air-gapping technology, along with military-grade encryption and WORM (write once, read many) technology, to create offline data backups that remain protected from attacks that target file copy and file format manipulation.

Ransomware attacks targeting data protection infrastructure are on the rise, notes Christophe Bertrand, senior analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group. They are insidious because they can remain dormant and undetected until triggered by a hacker-planned event. This can cause viruses to move from backup files to other file copies or to the cloud.

Quantum Active Vault

The best way to protect your backups is to create an isolated, offline copy of your data. This means it won't be accessible from the network, will require special permission to access, and will be physically – or at least logically – separated. This creates an air-gapped copy that Quantum calls Active Vault.

Christophe Bertrand adds: “They created a set of systems with internal air-gapped separation. So you can put a copy of your critical data directly into the air-gapped vault. If you then experience a ransomware attack and everything, including the backup server, is destroyed, you will still have whatever data you decided to move to the vault.”

This solution allows organizations to achieve air-gapping on-premises, rather than having to manage data through an external provider off-premises. This is particularly important, Bertrand said, because it dramatically speeds up recovery time.
