Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve Studio & Game of Thrones

Joe Finley of post production company Chainsaw has been using Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve Studio to edit and grade the popular award-winning series “Game of Thrones” since 2012.

Joe relies on the features and solutions provided by DaVinci Resolve to create special shades and colors, while its speed allows him to work in real time without rendering.

The use of DaVinci Resolve's different color palettes in Game of Thrones gives the viewer a distinct color "feel" for each of the "seven kingdoms" of the series and the ability to instinctively understand in which kingdom the action is taking place each time.

DaVinci Resolve's capabilities such as custom curves, secondaries, keyer and compositioning help create the characteristic "shadow" scenes and the special color shades in the episodes of the series as well as the separation between locations and levels of dramaturgy.

Overall, however, the series is attempting to give a very rich cinematic “texture.” “When I work with LOG footage I need a great starting point to give the video a rich, film-like feel. I use DaVinci Resolve all the time because its capabilities expand, support, and enhance my creativity rather than limit it,” concludes Joe Finley.
