Blackmagic Design Live Streaming in Alaska. Blackmagic Design announced that a wide range of its products were used for live streaming and archival footage during the National Park Service's 100th anniversary celebration in Glacier Bay, Alaska.
Live streaming for social media
Since 1916, the National Park Service has been responsible for protecting the United States’ national parks, which attract more than 275 million visitors each year. 2016 marked the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service with special events across the country, including a celebration at Glacier Bay National Park, the ancestral homeland of the Huna Tlingit people. The celebration was live-streamed on Facebook, the Hoonah Indian Association’s YouTube page, and the National Park Service’s website. StreamVu provided live streaming services, while 4K footage of the natural environment of Glacier Bay National Park was captured for archival purposes.
Equipment used
The video team used two URSA Mini 4.6K PL with shoulder gear, five Micro Studio Camera 4K, two Micro Cinema, five Video Assist 4Ks, two ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K switchers, one ATEM 1 M/E Broadcast Panel, one Teranex 3D Processor, three Teranex Express, two Teranex Minis SDI Distribution 12G. Also a Smart Videohub 20×20 router, one HyperDeck Studio 12G, one Blackmagic Duplicator 4K and other Blackmagic Design products, such as monitors and converters.
During the live stream, the cameras were set up to capture the event from all angles. The cameras, Teranex and playback sources were fed into the Smart Videohub 20×20 router. This distributed the signals to the various displays, recorders, encoders and most importantly, to the ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K switchers for the live broadcast.
Five Video Assist 4Ks were used with each Micro Studio Camera 4K, allowing the team to capture a 4K master from each camera while simultaneously sending the signals for the live stream. The Blackmagic Duplicator 4K was used to capture the event for distribution to media outlets that needed the footage for their newscasts.
Blackmagic Design Excellence
According to director John Brooks, the range of Blackmagic Design products they used covered the specific needs of the crew such as extreme weather conditions, minimizing costs, easy transportation and of course the highest quality of recording and broadcasting. He added: “The weight, size and cost of the equipment, and the quality of the result in these types of productions are particularly important and that is where Blackmagic has an advantage over all others”.
