Blackmagic Design has announced the immediate availability of the new BlackMagic 3G-SDI Arduino Shield, which allows the creation of custom controllers for cameras and other SDI devices.
Creating custom solutions to control multiple cameras via SDI is difficult and requires specialized knowledge. This means that integrating Blackmagic Design cameras into custom systems is a daunting task for broadcast engineers who need to build SDI hardware and use Blackmagic’s SDI control protocol to remotely control their cameras. To solve this problem, Blackmagic Design has created a new SDI expansion board for Arduino micro controllers, the BlackMagic Design 3G-SDI Arduino Shield.
Arduino is a popular open-source electronic prototyping platform based on easy-to-use hardware and software. Similar to the Raspberry Pi, which is primarily aimed at software engineers, Arduino is often the choice for hardware programmers and is designed as a simpler, more flexible, and lower-cost solution for creating all kinds of custom projects.
Arduino expansion boards are called “shields,” and Blackmagic Design decided to take advantage of this standard expansion capability to create the Blackmagic 3G-SDI Arduino Shield interface card.
The Blackmagic 3G-SDI Arduino Shield is a simple expansion board or "shield" that includes 1 SDI input and 1 SDI output. The SDI input allows the connection of any video source and the SDI output connects to the camera and has all the camera control protocol commands built in.
