Blackmagic Design has just announced the new upgraded software version, the Blackmagic Camera 6.2 update, which adds support Blackmagic RAW in new Pocket Cinema Camera 4K.
Blackmagic RAW, a revolutionary next-generation codec, combines the quality and benefits of RAW footage with the ease of use, speed and file sizes of traditional video formats. Blackmagic RAW is a smarter encoding format that gives creative professionals, editors, cinematographers, producers, filmmakers and more stunning images and incredible performance. Plus, cross-platform support and a free SDK for developers.
Blackmagic Camera 6.2 update
With the Blackmagic Camera 6.2 update, Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4K users have the ability to record images using Blackmagic RAW for the first time. This allows them to capture high-quality images in smaller files, giving them much longer recording times with the storage media they already have. For example, users can record over 2 hours of full cinematic quality Blackmagic RAW video in 4K on a single 256GB UHS-II SD card. In addition, Blackmagic RAW gives users even faster, smoother and higher quality editing and color correction in DaVinci Resolve than ever before.
Blackmagic Innovation
Once the Blackmagic Camera 6.2 update is installed, users can choose between fixed recording at 3:1, 5:1, 8:1 and 12:1 bit rates or between fixed recording quality Q0 and Q5. This allows them to prioritize image quality or file size. The encoding options give users incredible images at predictable and consistent file sizes. Fixed quality Q0 and Q5 use variable bit-rate encoding so that complex frames can be encoded at higher data rates while maintaining the maximum possible level of detail and quality.
Generation 4 Color Science
Blackmagic Design Generation 4 Color Science is used for superior imaging resulting in extremely accurate skin tones and beautiful, vibrant colors. Blackmagic RAW images are encoded using a custom 12-bit non-linear space designed to provide the maximum amount of color and dynamic range possible. In addition, Blackmagic RAW features extensive metadata support, highly optimized GPU and desktop CPU-speed processing, and more.
Blackmagic RAW
Traditional RAW encoders have large file sizes and suffer from quality issues due to the use of 4:2:2 video filters that reduce color resolution. Blackmagic RAW solves these problems, giving users the same quality, bit depth, dynamic range and controls as RAW, but with much better performance and smaller file sizes than most popular video encoders. Once DaVinci Resolve files are finished, additional GPU and CPU acceleration makes frame decoding incredibly fast, so users get ultra-smooth performance for editing and grading.
