SSDs are now much more robust than older optical solutions. The LaCie Mobile SSD Secure, while not one of the latest NVMe SSDs, is really fast with a maximum transfer speed of up to 1050 MB/s.
Inside the small metal casing is a compact SSD that makes it one of the smallest and lightest 1TB drives available. It is supported by the LaCie Toolkit which allows access to additional security and backup features.
It works very well as a working or backup drive and has the added advantage of being lockable, if needed.
Build quality and handling
Its size is impressive as it is significantly smaller than most other portable hard drives.
The data connection is via a USB Type-C port and a type-c to type-c cable is included in the package and it also comes with the LaCie Toolkit software, which offers the ability to secure it. The initial setup takes a few minutes and requires entering a SID code from the package. Everything is relatively simple and once the codes and options are entered and selected, the drive is ready and secure.
The Toolkit also provides the ability to mirror certain folders on your computer's hard drive. So, if you've completed a download and then need to back up those files, you can create a mirror folder and that backup will be done automatically.
