Blackmagic Design is rolling out a major update for the Blackmagic PYXIS 6K, with Blackmagic Camera 10.2 adding upgraded phase detect autofocus support, significantly enhancing the camera's capabilities for more demanding and modern shooting workflows. According to the relevant article by No Film School and the official Blackmagic Design support page, the update also brings new autofocus features and support for Blackmagic Cloud stream routing.
More modern autofocus for more flexible use
The new upgrade is not limited to the addition of PDAF. The PYXIS 6K now gains continuous autofocus, face detect autofocus, object detect autofocus, as well as the ability to adjust the autofocus transition speed. At the same time, support is added for assigning the autofocus mode toggle to shortcut keys, as well as the ability to temporarily pause continuous autofocus when the user holds down the focus button. These are changes that make the camera clearly more practical for shooting where greater speed and immediacy in operation are required.
An upgrade that makes PYXIS 6K even more relevant
The Blackmagic PYXIS 6K has already established itself as a highly versatile digital cinema camera, with a full frame 6K sensor, customizable box-style design, optical low pass filter, flexible mounting options and versions in EF, PL and L-Mount. What makes the new update so important is that it strengthens an area that for many creators is absolutely crucial in everyday use: autofocus. With this addition, the PYXIS 6K becomes an even more interesting choice for creators and production teams who want the logic and image quality of Blackmagic, but with a more modern and flexible behavior in the field.
Ideal evolution for run-and-gun, gimbal and solo operator workflows
In practice, this upgrade can prove particularly useful for filmmakers, content creators and operators working in more dynamic shooting environments. The addition of face and object detection autofocus, combined with continuous AF and transition speed settings, gives the PYXIS 6K more modern tools for motion capture, handheld use, gimbal setups or productions where the operator needs more support from the camera without sacrificing the cinematic character of the system.
