Connectivity: The future of broadcast production
IBC has decided to continue its Media Innovation Accelerator Program this year, despite the cancellation of the “physical” exhibition. The program was designed to encourage innovation in areas such as 5G, augmented reality, VFX, animation, AI and sustainability. The aim was to showcase these efforts during the IBC Exhibition.
This year's cancellation of IBC offered the organizers the opportunity and challenge to design and shape a live, multi-camera production from three different locations.
The challenge this year was to explore and understand the «art of the possible» regarding a 5G transmission system, based on current and future conditions and a range of production scenarios.
5G-enabled remote broadcast production
The first innovative proof of concept live demonstration of 5G-enabled remote broadcast production took place in Amsterdam and London as part of the IBC Showcase Accelerator innovation program.
The project team included ten international «champions»: Al Jazeera Media Network, BBC, BT Sport, EBU, ITV, Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS), SVT, TV2, ViacomCBS Networks International (VCNI) and Yle. The technical part of the demonstration of the project was undertaken by Aviwest, Huawei, LiveU, Mobile Viewpoint, NewTek and Sony.
Mobile Viewpoint
As part of the IBC Accelerator Program, Mobile Viewpoint participated in an exciting first live demonstration of AI based, 5G live remote broadcast production! Mobile Viewpoint deployed the AI-based VPilot and X-Cam systems for automated video production, covering a music performance in a fully automated manner. A drone was also used to cover the concert, as well as remote cameras to record interviews from the exhibition venue that hosts IBC every year, except this year, the RAI Amsterdam.
All coverage was transmitted over public and private 5G networks to Viacom CBS's MCR in London, from where the entire show was directed and distributed.
