Motion 4: Images that are imported, exported & re-imported may come out too bright

When you import an image file into a Motion project that was previously exported from Motion, the image may appear too pale or too bright.

Programs
Motion 4.0

Solution

To maintain compatibility with Final Cut Studio applications, Motion assumes that all imported still images are encoded with a gamma of 1/1.8. Motion 4 uses an efficient gamma 1/2.2 color correction model and automatically corrects imported still images from the default 1/1.8 to a gamma of 1/2.2. When you export an image, Motion 4 preserves the image at a gamma of 1/2.2 and correctly preserves the image as 1/2.2.

When you import the resulting exported image back into Motion, it is necessary to change the default gamma of the image from 1/1.8 to 1/2.2.

Change the default gamma setting of an image by selecting the image file in the project and choosing Window > Media or typing (Command + 5) to access the project's Media tab. Click the Inspector tab, then the Media tab in the inspector. Select “2.2” from the Gamma pop-up menu to set the image in the project to 1/2.2.
