MacWorld Magazine Research
Article by the well-known, specialized online magazine MacWorld, about which is the best Mac for video editing.
“Apple Macs are particularly capable for video editing and many video editors choose to invest in the latest Macs as they are traditionally considered the only choice for video professionals.
But choosing the right Mac for video editing can be a challenge. Apple makes a wide range of Mac laptops (the 12-inch MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro) and desktops (Mac mini, iMac, iMac Pro, and Mac Pro). And while all Apple Macs are attractively designed and well-built, some Macs are better suited for video editing than others.
Video editing is a challenge for any computer system and requires a professional high-end system. Of course, all Macs can edit video clips, and are used to create movies, TV shows, commercials, and professional online video clips, but there is a difference between editing a quick clip for YouTube and creating an entire movie.
Digital video has huge demands on processor power, graphics power (for rendering) and – above all – storage space. Video editing, especially high-definition video, consumes a lot of hard drive space. And now, with 4K editing, an additional issue is created.
With all of this in mind, we took a close look at the Mac lineup, custom built-to-order Mac options, and the available accessories, software, and services that matter most to enthusiastic filmmakers.
Our pick for the best Mac for professional video editors is the 27in iMac with Retina 5K Display.
The 27in iMac with Retina 5K Display may not have the “Pro” in its name, but a look at its full feature set will tell you that it’s not aimed at amateurs. The base model comes with a quad-core Intel i5 processor and an AMD Radeon Pro 570 with 4GB of video memory. With 8GB of RAM as standard, it can be upgraded to 32GB. The base model has a 1TB hard drive, while the high-end model goes up to a 2TB Fusion Drive.
In the custom build options you can choose a 4.0GHz quad-core Intel I7 processor, upgrade it to a 3TB Fusion Drive, or add a different graphics card to the top model – an AMD Radeon Pro 580 with 8GB of video memory.
The other major feature of the iMac is the 27-inch Retina 5K display. In our research, we tested the display and found it to have the highest contrast ratio we've ever seen, while also displaying 99% of the DCI-P3 color space. (DCI-P3 is the color space for digital film viewing.)
Because the Retina display is built into the iMac, it runs at 60MHz, not 30MHz like most 4K displays. Its size is ideal for video editing, allowing you to edit 4K video at full size while still seeing the controls around it.
There is no doubt: when it comes to speed, performance and value for money an iMac is ideal!!!”
